Maybe I'm lacking in adventurousness, but I have friends who lived in Yemen and in 2010 they spoke of any visitors needing a police escort--which I guess needs to be paid for--and I think it would discourage people from picking up a hitch hiker. I'd be pleased to hear if anyone has had experiences that contradict (or support) my belief, but I doubt that hitch hiking by foreigners happens at all in this country.
