Thanks for the welcome!Edit

Thank you for the friendly welcome - it is much appreciated. Still browsing and finding my way around, but hope to add some content about South Africa mostly (and, of course, my hometown... Cape Town). Cheers!

Guildwiki and secretgwEdit

Hi Mr Penchina and thanks for taking the time to leave that note on my guildwiki user page. You had noticed my griping about the disappearance of the secretgw.gamewikis.org domain. Sadly, I don't think you can help me. The issue with me is that I do the majority of my editing at work (generally whilst on night shifts.) The nanny software my company uses bans anything that is categorised as "Games" related, so most of the Wikia games sites are out. Secretgw, however, was not tagged as Games, so I was able to view and edit freely. Damn shame, to be honest, and certainly not your fault. I would imagine the cost of having the entirety of Wikia mirrored in a non-tagged state would be prohibitively expensive! But thank you for taking the time - I am impressed that someone of your stature can take time out to talk to us little guys :) Snograt

Marvel Database Skin and other things Edit

Hi Gil,

I've pretty much figured out that the skin uses components from Yahoo!'s User Interface, but I wanted to see what's under the hood, as it were.

Admittedly, it's an interesting design. Not something I'm too keen on deploying on Battlestar Wiki, but rather it's evil "mockapedia" twin, Wiki Frakr.

Any help you could give me would be much appreciated! ;-) -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 22:49, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Also, my "e-mail this user" function works. Apparently, I never saved the settings. Sorry about that. -- Joe Beaudoin Jr. 18:44, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Gil, can we talk about some issues persuant to my latest article about Wikia? Please contact me as soon as your schedule permits. Best Regards, Phil Butler

Sleep Apnea Edit

The only way to know for sure is to get a sleep study. If your doctor won't sent you for one ask him to at least do an overnight oximeter test. I recommend you head over to cpaptalk.com to ask more questions Jamesrskinner 00:27, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

IMDb translation Edit

Hi. Thanks for showing this brand new wiki some interest. What kind of thins were you talking about translating? Did you know about http://german.imdb.com ? There are not that many things translated there though. They have a few more, italy, finnland I think. But they sertenly have not gone to things like Hindi or Japanese. Perhaps it's time to help these people surf imdb. But again, I'm not sure how this can be done in a good manner. --Steinninn 05:35, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Umm... just go to a persons profile page or a movie. Search Star Wars or George Lucas and some of it will be in German. So, yea, for the moment I'm just trying to build this wiki up so that it will be easy for users to translate any of the IMDb Occupations. And when I've finished that (maybe in a few years:) I'll take it to further steps. Making a full translation of IMDb sounds like something they should do them selves. But we could try. Would you be interested in editing some of it? And it's also impossible to try to translate everything, because it's an ever changing site. Also remember that I'm not trying to duplicate IMDb, you know that right, any duplicated information will be deleted without warning, that includes any listings of who was in what and stuff like that. So, could you try to explain how a full wikia translation of IMDb would work? --Steinninn 07:35, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Re: UMass Edit

No, I used to live near Amherst for a couple of years. I've since moved back to my native South for the time being.

Thanks for your kind comments about PokerWiki. SheridanCat and MarkT have also been huge contributors and are admins. Regards, PhilipR 21:58, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

HalopediaEdit

Hi, I'm one of the admins at Halopedia. In August, you posted a message on my talk page suggesting getting press for Halopedia. We were going through a move from another server at the time, and I was waiting for the owner of the website to arrive before responding. However, at this point it looks as though he's not coming back for quite a while. So would that still be possible at this point? --Dragonclaws(talk) 01:33, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Gil,

I figured the Wikia system would be the best to reach you. I've been in media sales and marketing for over 17 years and would really like a chance to speak with you about driving revenue for your company.

Please feel free to contact me at anytime. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

Petdiabetes Wiki Edit

Clean up on aisle 3Edit

P.S. (on top) Gil -- I did get a mail from the PR agency, thanks! Can I ask you (or someone) for advice on "cleaning up" my wiki to make it more attractive/credible for visitors if the PR actually works? Thanks, Steve
Steve - I will let the community team know that you're interested in some extra attention. I will be in touch. Thanks, -- BillK (talk) 02:46, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
Gil, Bill -- thanks so much for the extra attention! Bite called me yesterday and things are moving along! Thanks again Gil for your sponsorship and good words! --Steve and Jock

thanksEdit

Thanks so much, Gil, for the attention and the offers to help! There's lots we need, I am not sure what we can ask for. Most of all I'm hoping that more people with diabetic pets (or relatives, for that matter) find out about our wiki. (Yes, that's a request for publicity!).

There's a narrowing but still large gap right now between the current state of knowledge of community-educated caregivers like myself, who follow the latest research and exchange real data, and the vast bulk of veterinarians who are often 10-20 years behind on treatments, diet, and strategies for dealing with diabetic pets. (Not all are, of course, or we would all be in the dark!) So getting the word out saves lives of dogs & cats. I'm glad that NPR mentioned us. (See the link on the Main_Page .)

So maybe an interview or some other central wikia publicity might be helpful. Also we need more editors, and perhaps an openminded and progressive veterinarian willing to chime in and lend an air of credibility.

As for felinediabetes.com, we're affiliated in that Venita and I each started our learning about pet diabetes on that site, and we remain regular contributors to that forum, as well as always learning more there. The owner, Rebecca, is cautiously willing to swap links with us on a trial basis. She is currently using Google ads, as is wikia, so I don't know how a swap would work.

Please let me know what possibilities you see -- my email is spelled out on the top of my user page. --Talk 17:58, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

P.S. The Petdiabetes Wiki has a smaller target audience than, say, Family Guy or Star Trek, and therefore has fewer page views, but has just as much editing going on, just as much organization, over 100 categories, heavily sourced references, and is actually useful and life-saving in some cases. I would be most grateful if you could find some way to list it on the front page of wikia under the "Active Wikis" list. By number of edits, it's as active as "Family Guy" which was just featured. --Steve and Jock 23:59, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

P.P.S. This 10th anniversary message from felinediabetes.com gives some idea of the flavor of things: http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/read.php?8,476249 ----Steve and Jock

First time wiki'r Edit

I just finished listening to your interview at Stanford from the Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders podcast. Thanks for taking the time. It was very insightful.

You mentioned we could add you to your LinkedIn account. I attempted to do this (as I am a fan of LinkedIn myself), only to realize because you were 3 degrees away I was going to have to pay $10. I thought to myself, fine, but then when I went to pay I couldn't pay via paypal. I was bummed as that is the easiest way to pay. I'm hoping you get this and can add me to your list:

name - Mike McFadden

email - mike@mcfaddenplace.com

I do wish you the best at wikia. I'm hoping I can contribute more to the wiki golf page. It's in need of some love.

Thanks for Invitation Edit

  • Hi Gil, thanks for your invitation to join this Wiki. Something that confuses the heck out foreigners (and some English people too) is the fact that England is not Great Britain is not the United Kingdom. It is like saying Manhattan is New York (City) is New York State.

WikiSpotlight Edit

Hi Gil,

In reference on how wiki get promoted in WikiIndex, add Category:Draft weblog article to the wiki and start writing about why it is good. So far all it takes is one more person to promote it to the front page. It would be great to have you add depth to the Wikia wiki at WikiIndex, that would be fabulous!!! (Is this the answer you were looking for? ;-) Best, Mark

Hi Gil, I didn't mean to imply that wikia would be the topic of a wiki spotlight, but rather as you suggest, each individual wikia wiki. add the tag above and work on the content. Here is what is already in WikiIndex - Best, Mark

Talk pages Edit

Hi, Gil -- I saw your edits to Talk:WorldWiki. Just a heads-up, cause you're new to this -- it's bad form to delete comments from talk pages. Talk pages are part of the history of the wiki, and comments should never be deleted from pages unless they're obviously inappropriate. That's especially true in a case like this, where the comments are critical of the wiki -- when that guy comes back to look at the conversation, he's going to think that you censored the conversation, and it'll make him feel jilted and bitter.

Plus, I wrote that beautiful, inspiring message about mutual respect and collaboration, and you hate to see that kind of thing go to waste. I don't act inspiring too often.

I think it would be better for you to put the page back the way it was, and then respond to the questions brought up in the conversation. Is that cool with you? -- Danny (talk) 23:13, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

learning the wiki way - put it back the way it was, maybe I can drown it with other comments. Should comments go at the top or bottom? [Gil] ([talk]) 23:19, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
I do things differently from the way most wikis do -- but then again, maybe that's why I end up liking talk pages, and everybody else apparently hates them. My system is: You put new headings at the top of the page, so that people see the new comment as soon as they click on the page. Also, you reply to comments on the same page, so that you can read it like a thread.
Don't worry about drowning it out -- getting criticism is an opportunity for you to express your philosophy in a reasonable, productive way. Other people are going to come along with the same question -- why WorldWiki and not TravelWiki? It's good for you to answer that once, and then you won't have to answer it a million times. I'll put the page back the way it was... -- Danny (talk) 23:51, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

SignatureEdit

Hey Gil: Thanks for the note on my talk page -- I just sent you an e-mail about this weekend.

I'm posting here because I have some advice for you. I say this with love, because I know you're new to wikis: Your signature sucks. You have to date your posts, so that people can keep track of when the conversations happened. Here's instructions on how to make a cool, tricked-out signature like the kind what I have.

  • Click on the "preferences" tab at the top right of your screen.
  • On the Preferences page, put this in the Nickname box:
-- ''[[User:Gil|<font color="Blue">Gil</font>]] ([[User talk:Gil|<font color="Blue" size="1">talk</font>]])''
  • Then check the "Raw signatures" box underneath, and hit save.
  • When you sign your talk posts, type ~~~~, and the new signature will appear.

And that's how you get to be one of the cool kids. -- Danny (talk) 01:53, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Very nice with the new signature. And don't worry about being uncool because you're getting yelled at -- that's how you know you're making a difference in the world. You can always judge a man by the quality of the 13-year-olds who are mad at him. -- Danny (talk) 02:36, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Welcome templateEdit

And here's post #2 of the night: I just created a Welcome template here, which is based on the one that I use on Muppet Wiki. It's for new people who just have an IP address. When you see a red Talk link on Recent changes, all you have to do is add this to the page:

{{welcome}} ~~~~

The brackets tell the software to insert the "welcome" template. I hope that's useful for you... -- Danny (talk) 02:21, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

WelcomeEdit

Your Welcome and SuggestionsEdit

Thank you for your welcome and for what you do for the Wikia!
Do you already have a logo in mind for this Wikia? Or would a logo contest be appropriate? (Something based on the blue marble perhaps?)
Could you also take a look at the Main Page/alt -- want to use it or part of it?

Quitter Edit

Gil, Was reading the Wall Street Journal on the beach the other day (pretty boring life) and read that you left e-bay. Searched the web and found you will be CEO in this new playground. Call or e-mail me when you get a chance -- would love to catch up. Also have some old pics I'd like to send your way. Couldn't find an e-mail address for you anywhere -- I hope this makes it to you. Good luck in the new position!

All the best, Dennis Miller dennismiller@optonline.net

DCU Edit

No, they aren't the same. The DC Animated Universe and the DCUniverse aren't the same. Please respond on my talk page at that wiki. Lightman 12:57, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

The difference between the two is that The DC Animated Universe only deals with animated shows as where the DC Universe deals with everything concerning the DC comic characters, teams, and comic books.Thai420 14:52, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikia screencasts Edit

Gil - I've posted another test screencast on blip.tv (I've given up on youtube). It's more legible than the ones I made last night, but I think it's still too small. Ideas? - Leo|Talk 18:13, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

I created another screencast (Editing 01). Also created a page to organize my screencasts. I'll post further updates there, so you might want to watchlist it. We can discuss the process, ideas, lesson plans, etc on its talk page. We can create a similar Help page in Wikia later to organize screencasts from all contributors. - Leo|Talk 21:50, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikia Spotlight Edit

Hi Gil. I'm wondering if you could add the Inheritance Trilogy Wiki to Wikia Spotlight sometime later on? Thanks. G.He(Talk!) 00:55, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. :) G.He(Talk!) 20:51, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Kind words Edit

Thanks for your kind words over at AncientRome wiki! And thanks for the offer of Wikia-wide promotion. It's perhaps getting to the point where it's coming together and users can hopefully see some logic to the format. - Nhprman 13:36, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Cross-linking Edit

You can add World Wikia here. You can add a link to the Hitchhiking Wiki anytime, anywhere :)

How come there are no Google ads on World Wikia? I'm thinking of finding an other host, but if it would be somehow possible to have the Hitchhiking Wikia without ads I'm not going to bother with that... Guaka 18:30, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Responding to your message Edit

This is User:H Padleckas from the Engineering Wiki. You left the following message on my Engineering Wiki talk page:

"When you're ready for some visitors, let me know and I will ask the Wikia PR team to interview you for an article and get your suggestions for engineering magazines and web sites we should try to pitch your story to "

What is this about? Am I suppose to have a story for publication in an engineering magazine or web site? What would my "story" be about? H Padleckas 21:42, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Trying To Establish Contact With Wikia Edit

My name is Jeff Howard and my team and I have developed a nifty navigation application that integrates with the MediaWiki platform. Our goal is to encourage universities to begin using our product next fall. I would enjoy having the chance to discuss our application's usages and benefits with you sometime soon. Unfortunately, I can’t spill the beans publicly over this channel but I am available anytime for discussion at JeffreyMHoward@gmail.com or at 814-397-6791.

Wowwiki bad ads list Edit

Heya, on the subject of blocking TOS-violating google ads from WoWWiki, you might want to check out http://www.wowwiki.com/Bad_ads. I've tried to set it up in a machine-parseable format. (Oh, by the way, I don't think I'll be watchlisting your talk page any time soon with the crazy amounts of edits going on here, so if you or anyone else at wikia wants to comment, the talk pages of those two pages is probably a better idea :-)) --Mikk 11:14, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Ahh, nice going with the keyword filtering idea. It's certainly filtering out a lot of trash easily. There's still quite a few ads showing though; I've singled them out on the bad ads page now.
Should I be talking to someone else about this by the way? MatthewS perhaps?
(Ok dangit, I've watchlisted your page. Not fair making you run around hunting other pages. I'm not the overworked one. Not anymore anyway :-P )

Wii Wiki Edit

Anything you think would improve the wiki, be my guest, we need to do something to get it up and running, with more active users and more pages. Our main page has folding tabs, so wanted articles and new pages ARE on the main page, but under the "What to Do" tab. What we need most right now is active users. One of our best editors just quit because he felt that we had too few users and were going nowhere. How do you suggest we go about getting more active users to join? --WiiKing

See you there. --Karlosian 00:11, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Notice Edit

I have summarized the issues for you on GWiki, I have demanded my money from Gravewit multiple times and I have gotten no response from either you or him. I am afraid this "silent treatment" will not work with me. I am letting you know that I have started talks with legal council and that if I do not see responses to my requests I will proceed to hire a lawyer and sue Gravewit and try to stop the sale.

Please, no more stalling tactics and soothing words and, for once, give me a straight answer, even if it's as simple as "go ahead, do your worst." --Karlosian 08:35, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

recipes infobox template Edit

I don't know if it's a problem really, I was just trying to figure out if the list of ingredients needed to be bulleted or not. I really don't think it's incredibly necessary, but I've seen it done that way on other recipe sites and recipe wikis.

In terms of a infobox template, I'd be happy to work on it. Maybe something like this (see box on the left could be a model -- particularly the servings, time and difficulty sections. Or at least it could be a jumping off point. Elocina 04:38, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Do you have anything to say about the new skin? Edit

At most companies when a controversial, major change at the company occurs, the CEO usually at least has a press release. You seem to have been MIA. It would help your cause if you had some PR massaged statement supporting the new skin and the employees who worked on it.

I'm finding it harder and harder to support Wikia and the direction the company is taking disturbs me. I'm not an investor, so maybe they are pleased, but Wikia's recent moves have alienated many veteran editors.

Finding a host Edit

Was just reading your comment here and basically I noticed that last month, that wiki went down because their host (AnimeOTK, which is listed on his userpage) went down due to financial troubles.

I'm not familiar with alternative wiki hosts besides Wikia, and was wondering if you had any suggestions for places (or knew people who might) so that I can pass on the suggestions to the status-tracking blogs (SAW & OTKserver) in hopes that they can continue the project. +y@talk 01:35, May 3, 2012 (UTC)
