Port of Spain, with a municipal population of 49,000 (2000), but with a metropolitan population of about 350,000 residents, is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago and the country's third largest municipality by population, after Chaguanas and San Fernando. It is located on the Gulf of Paria, on the north-west coast of the island of Trinidad. The city serves primarily as a retail and administrative centre.
