Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian Inca citadel located on a high ridge in the Urubamba Valley in southern Peru. Construction started around 1400 AD but abandoned as an official site for the Inca’s only 100 years later when the Spanish invaded. Although Machu Picchu was known locally, it was bought to international attention in 1911 by the famous American Yale explorer and archaeologist Hiram Bingham. As the site was never discovered by the Spanish during their conquest, Machu Picchu lay dormant for many hundreds of years. For this reason it is highly significant in the history of the Inca civilization. In 1983 Machu Picchu became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 2007 it was voted one of the New Severn Wonders of the World in a worldwide internet poll.
Machu Picchu receives thousands of international visitors every year, and is one of the most popular historical sites in South America. Machu Picchu is responsible for a huge increase in Peru vacations and Peru travel.
