Hotels and lodging[]

Hotels in Peru are as varied as the country's landscapes and people. Luxury five-star hotels are available in Lima, and luxurious botique and historical hotels, monasteries and haciends are a rewarding way to visit Cusco and the Machu Picchu area.

Eco lodges in the Peruvian Amazon provide a comfortable, up-close look into the wildlife of the world's largest rainforest.

Small family-run hotels in Peru are perhaps the most intimate way to get to know the country, that is, except for an adventurous home stay where you'll come to understand the culture of Peru first hand with a Peruvian family.

Machu Picchu[]

Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian Inca citadel located on a high ridge in the Urubamba Valley in southern Peru. Construction started around 1400 AD but abandoned as an official site for the Inca’s only 100 years later when the Spanish invaded. Although Macchu Picchu was known locally, it was bought to international attention in 1911 by the famous American Yale explorer and archaeologist Hiram Bingham.

As the site was never discovered by the Spanish during their conquest,

Machu Picchu lay dormant for many hundreds of years. For this reason it is highly significant in the history of the Inca civilization. In 1983 Machu Picchu became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 2007 it was voted one of the New Severn Wonders of the World in a worldwide internet poll.

Machu Picchu receives thousands of international visitors every year, and is one of the most popular historical sites in South America. Machu Picchu is responsible for a huge increase in Peru vacations and Peru travel.

Nightlife[]

According to the World Travel Guide,

Lima’s thriving night scene and you’ll find everything from salsa beats to smooth jazz. After-dark revelries bursts into action late on Thursday night and lasts until the early hours of Sunday morning.

In Miraflores, music bars and clubs crowd around Parque Kennedy while the swankiest clubs are set in the Larcomar shopping centre. The perennial hotspot is Barranco where the hippest bars, clubs and music haunts take over both scrappy hole-in-the-walls and sophisticated colonial mansions.

Those hankering after a more cultural soiree will find the answer in Lima’s colourful peñas (folkloric dance shows) where nabbing a table will involve a cover charge. The reward is vibrant music and traditional song performed by high-octane, costumed performers.
