Oliy Majlis (Parliament of Uzbekistan)

Uzbekistan (official name: Republic of Uzbekistan) is a doubly landlocked country in Central Asia. A doubly landlocked country means a country surrounded by other landlocked countries. Uzbekistan is surrounded by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Only other country in the world of being doubly landlocked is Europe's Liechtenstein, a country surrounded by other landlocked countries. With an area of 447,400 km², it is the 56th largest country, but its population of 26,593,000 makes it the 44th most populous country.

Apart from the capital, Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are other major cities of Uzbekistan, and each one of them has many historical sites.

History

The antrhopologiacal and archeological findings and evidences indicate that the region which is now Uzbekitan was populated to some extent even as far back as in the second millennium BC. By the 6th century, the civilizations flourishing in these lands became part of the Persian Achaemenid empire. By 327 BC, Alexander the Great has reached these regions and made a lasting impressions on society of these regions. For centuries, the regions also remained under the control of the Iranian Empires. In the 14th century, Timur (that is, Tamerlane) subjugated these regions and overpowered the Mongols who were ruling these lands. During the 19th century, the Russian Empire exapanded fast in Central Asia and many nations became part of the Russian Empire. On formation of the Sovient Union (USSR) in early 20th century, these nations continued to be the part of the Soviet Union. After the Sovient Republics became independent, Uzbekistan became one among such independent republics on 25 December 1991.
