Lahore (Urdu: لاہور), the second largest city of Pakistan, is the capital of the Punjab Province. It has a glorious history and has remained associated with a number of Mughal Emperors and Empress. Lahore is located near the Ravi River and the Indian border, Wagah. The major languages spoken are Punjabi and Urdu. Lahore has excellently preserved all its monuments of the Mughal period and thereafter, and has many interesting spots and the spectacles for the visitors. The city is well known for its cultural and literary activities. People of Lahore are friendly people and they celebrate many festivals blending the traditional mughal, modern, western and latest trends.

Attractions[]
Lahore is a unique city with a rich cultural tradition. It has been described as the heritage city of Pakistan - it is a city of bazaars and gardens, a city with a number of mosques and mausoleums of the Mughal period, a city of forts and palaces. Most of the historical monuments of Lahore have been preserved in comparatively good condition, and are open all round the year for the tourists and the visitors. While you are in Lahore, you should see all these monuments to have a feel of the historical majestic grandeur of this city. Some of the places are:

Alamgiri Gate, Lahore Fort
Akbar, the Mughal Emperor shifted his capital from Fatehpur Sikri (India) to Lahore in the late-16th century. He completely renovated a dilapidated structures of an existing fort and built the Lahore Fort (presently one of the World Heritage Sites, an imposing Fort which served as the capital of Mughal Empire for around 14 years. The Fort covers within its walls an area of around 30 acres and has many beautiful structures inside it built during the reigns of the successive Mughal Emperors. The Lahore Fort has tall towers and many imposing gates, each an architectural marvel in itself.

Badshahi Masjid at night
There are many famous mosques in Lahore, and the Badshahi Masjid, the Mosque of the Emperor, is the most famed among them. It was built in the 17th century by Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal Emperor. It has a giant courtyard, one of the largest in the world, where around one hundred thousand persons can congregate and offer prayers. The mosque has three marble domes in perfect symmetry, and has four imposing minarets (towers) each around 175 feet high. Other famous mosques of Lahore are:

Shalimar Gardens
Lahore was once the capital city of Mughal Empire which ruled most of the regions of this part of the world. The Mughal Emperors were not only great rulers and warriors, they were also artistically inclined. During their rule, they laid a number of Gardens in the city, the most prominent one being the Shalimar Gardens, one of the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in Pakistan. A counterpart of this Gardens also exist in Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir, India) The Shalimar Gardens, Lahore covers an area of around 40 acres and was commissioned by the 4th Mughal Emperor, Shah Jehan, who is also the famed builder of Taj Mahal. The Shalimar has a water channel over 600 meters long which serves and feeds 100s of fountains and many decorative pools around the gardens. The Shalimar has three terraces with many lawns and flower beds with exotic plants and trees. There are many marble structures around the gardens to serve as pavilions. Shopping[]
Lahore is a historically heritage city of Pakistan, and befitting its status as a heritage city, you may enjoy the pleasure of shopping in a style reminiscent of an era gone by. Thus, in Anarkali Bazaar, named after a gypsy girl and a courtesan in the Akbar's Court, you may satisfy your urge to bargain and buy in the narrow streets with stalls stocked with innumerable novelties: traditional and authentic glass bangles, leather articles, embroidered garments, ornaments of beaten gold and silver crafted in exotic designs, silk pieces and garments, and many more such things. At the same time, Lahore has modern malls and shopping arcades selling goods from almost any part of the world.

Nightlife[]
In most of the cities of Pakistan, nightlife as perceived in the traditional sense, is absent. This is also generally applicable to Lahore too. Despite this, nightlife in Lahore is more vibrant and active as compared to other cities of Pakistan.
To begin with you have the traditional avenues like watching movies and theatrical performances. You have a slightly different and more exotic choice of watching variety cultural programs at centers like Al-Hamra Cultural Center on the famous Mall Road. in a sense, it is the cultural nerve center of Lahore and many intellectuals and artist gather there almost daily. Perhaps for an international tourist, language may be a barrier - but, it may not as watching the people in action on stage and listening to exotic notes of music shall be surely a unique experience.
On the other hand, there are many other places where young Pakistani pop artist perform. In case, you have the right contacts, you may surely find your way to adult entertainment too for which Lahore has been a preferred destination for long.
