The euro is a common currency of 17 of the 27 member states of the European Union. These countries are Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. Use of Euro banknotes and coins commenced on 1st January 2002. However, the background of Euro as almost as old as the conceptualization of the European Union.
