With a population of around 75,067,000 (2206), it is the second-most populous country of Africa. It shares its borders with Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Sudan. Ethiopia is the only country is Africa which has remained a sovereign state all along without being colonized by any other power. It also has the distinction of being the second official Christian state, first being Armenia. Ethiopia is uniquely positioned on the cross roads of civilizations of North Africa, the Middle East and other parts of Africa. Exploring Ethiopia

Ethiopia has many gorges carved through the landscape by the Blue Nile River and is crossed by the Great Rift Valley. Ethiopia also has a history that dates back to the Old Testament. Amharic is the main language spoken in Ethiopia.

It was home to the Queen of Sheba, of Axum and Lalibela and is said to be the resting place for the Ark of The Covenant. Although it was converted to Christianity before much of mainland Europe, it remained unknown to European civilisations for more than a thousand years.

Ethiopia is also a land of ancient and medieval monuments, possibly the most extensive in Africa with many colourful cultures and a varied wildlife.

Seven of Ethiopia's sights are part of the world cultural heritage list:

  • Awash Lower Valley, palaeontological and prehistoric sites
  • Axum historical and archaeological sites, central Tigray Region
  • Castles of Gondar and other monuments
  • Rock-hewn churches of Lalibela
  • Simien Mountain National Park
  • Tiya pre-historical and archaeological sites
  • Valley of the Omo, palaeontological and prehistoric sites

National Parks: Awash National Park, Gambala National Park, Mago National Park, Omo National Park, Simien National Park
