Overview
Corpus Christi is a city on the Gulf Coast of Texas. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 277,454 people (though a July 1, 2004 estimate placed the population at 281,196), making it the eighth-largest city in the state. The translation from Latin of the city's name is Body of Christ, given to the settlement by the Spanish, in honor of the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharist).
Corpus Christi is located on the Corpus Christi Bay, near the north tip of South Padre Island. It has a welcoming climate, and is known for its numerous hotels and beaches. An U.S. Naval Air Base is located south of the city, also putting it in the position of military importance. The small downtown area, packed with hotel towers, fades out into green suburbs surrounding the city. North and west of downtown, neighborhoods take place while to the south, commercial and industrial buildings surround the area.
