Exploring Alaska
Soar over the mountain peaks and snow-covered glaciers of the Wrangell St. Elias National Park wilderness via Wrangell-St Elias National Park has been called America's "mountain kingdom" and seeing it from a small airplane is the only way to get a true sense of the grandeur of this area.
While Wrangell-St. Elias is truly a wilderness park with few marked trails or backcountry facilities, there are great opportunities for alpine hiking in the area. From Kennicott, the old mining roads lead in 3 directions for at least 5 miles.
Most Alaskan visitors will see a glacier, but here at Kennicott you can actually walk on a glacier! Local guiding companies offer safe, fully-supervised Alaska glacier hikes right out onto the Root Glacier where you enter a fascinating world of moulons, pressure ridges, fathomless blue water pools and exquisite and mysterious ice formations.
Experience the thrill of Alaska river rafting on the glacier-fed Kennicott River in the largest National Park in the United States.
The Kennicott and McCarthy Alaska area is great for mountain biking - there are plenty of old mining roads to explore, with little or no traffic. The roads can be rocky with uneven surfaces, so mountain bikes are recommended. You can rent a bike or bring your own. Trail maps are available at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge located in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
